gentoo linux is a unique, high-performance Linux distribution which provides among other things an easy-to-use, ports-based tool for adding, deleting and updating software. This system, called gentoo portage, is an alternative to RedHat and Debian-style package systems.

Gentoo portage allows configuration of mirror sites as the source of the portage file tree and The UK Mirror Service offers both the core operating system distribution as well as the almost 5,000 resources offered through gentoo portage. gentoo is well-documented and is available on the x86, PowerPC, Sparc and Sparc64 platforms.
