HotJavaTM Browser
Version 3.0
Linux Installation Instructions

To install HotJava Browser on Linux platforms, you need to execute the script that you downloaded for HotJava Browser (hjb3_0-linux.sfx). Follow these steps:
  1. If you do not already have one, you must first obtain a JDK or JRE 1.1.6 release ported to Linux. (There have been problems reported running HotJava Browser 3.0 with JDK 1.1.7; use JDK 1.1.6 only.) Check the Java Linux site at http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux.html. Please note that this link is provided as a convenience for our customers. Sun Microsystems has not tested the referenced software and cannot be held responsible for its actual operation or functionality.

  2. Provide executable permission to the downloaded HotJava Browser install script:
    % chmod +x hjb3_0-linux.sfx

  3. On the command line, run the install script hjb3_0-linux.sfx with one or two arguments, as described below.

This script creates a directory called HotJava that contains:

    • The executable file (hotjava)
    • The browser jar file
    • Supporting documentation

It also creates a link to the hotjava executable in either /usr/bin or $HOME.

If you want both the HotJava directory and a link to the hotjava executable file to be put in /usr/bin, run the install script as root and specify the location of your JDK as a single argument:

    # hjb3_0-linux.sfx jdk-location

If you want the HotJava directory to be put somewhere other than /usr/bin, specify the desired location as the second argument to the install script:

    % hjb3_0-linux.sfx jdk-location browser-location

You must have write access to browser-location.

If you run the script with both arguments, a link to the hotjava executable is created as either /usr/bin/hotjava (if you run the script as root), or $HOME/hotjava (if you don't have write access to /usr/bin).
