This version of 'file' is somewhat modified from the version that
Ian is distributing. We request that you complain to bsdi about
any problems in it and don't bother Ian (we'll take care of that
:-). If you need a newer copy of 'file', connect to ftp.cs.toronto.edu
with anonymous ftp and pick up the stuff in /pub/darwin/file.

Here's our exchange with Ian about redistributing 'file':

Subject: about distributing changed versions of 'file'

I just re-read the MAINT document and I wanted to be sure that it was
okay to redistribute 'file', since I had to whack it somewhat to fit
our environment. Specifically:

+ I added new Makefiles to support building from CD-ROM

+ I modified the man pages to replace the __foo__ stuff

+ I moved 'Magdir' to 'magic' (purely aesthetics :-)

+ I added .m suffixes to all the magic files for pmake's sake

  + I added a bsdi.m file for bsdi-specific magic numbers (only
        one entry for now)

+ I added BSDI rcs-id comments (not copyrights) to files that
        were modified

+ I modified the existing Id keywords in the files that changed
so that BSDI's check-ins wouldn't change them (changed the $
        signs to spaces)

+ I moved all the material that wasn't relevant to BSDI's
distribution into a subdirectory (the original makefiles,
        localinc files, PORTING, TARGETS, tst/Makefile)

This all seems pretty innocent to me, but I thought I'd check with
you just in case. You're welcome to have a copy of the changed
distribution to look at if you would like. Also, we can distribute
a README with a disclaimer for you if you'd like.

Hopefully most of our customers will call us first for support,

Donn

On second thought, could you please include:
        - the list of changes you made (the level of detail
you sent me is fine), and
        - a note on where to FTP the original (you can copy the two-liner
from the man page if you have the latest version thereof).
in a seperate file in the source tree (maybe README.BSDI or whatever
your convention is).

Thanks again
Ian Darwin
