     SESSION 4.

In this session the method of obtaining of a printed (hard copy) output
of your text will be described. Two special WORDFLEX features, underlining of
text and/or boldface printing (actually, printing with double strike), will
be explained first.

The wide variety of printers compatible with the IBM Personal Computer
makes it impractical to use underlining and boldface printing commands
specific to any particular printer. Instead, a more general approach was
chosen compatible with most currently available printers.

The parts of the text to be underlined or printed boldface have to be
delimited using two control characters:

Ctrl P - displayed as delimits the beginning
Ctrl Q - displayed as delimits the end

In addition, the line with text to be underlined or printed boldface
(printed with double strike) has to be terminated with Ctrl U for underline or
Ctrl B for boldface. If both characters are used, the delimited portion of
the text is both underlined and printed with double strike. You can see an
                            ***Press Ctrl Pg Dn***
example of an underlined text in the title of this (and the other sessions).
None of the control characters used for underlining of bold face printing of
the text is actually transmitted to the printer. These characters are not
counted when a right justification of a line is performed (this and other more
advanced features will be handled in Session 5). Also, the alignment of
columns must be adjusted since the delimiters and are not actually part of
the line.

          Examples:

parts of this line are are underlined
in this line, some words will be printed with double strike
last line will be underlined and printed boldface

The printing of text stored in the current buffer is invoked by the Alt O
(O for output) command. There are two prompts displayed on the command line
following the Alt O command. The first allows you to select right
justification of the printed line. Right justification means that all lines
have the same length (64 characters by default or another length selected by
the Alt A command). This is achieved by padding the line with the necessary
number of blanks. In Session 5 we will show that the text in the buffer can
be also right justified by the Alt B command; selection of the right
justification of the printed text has no effect on the text in the buffer.

The next prompt displayed asks whether the entire buffer should be
printed (option "a") or a marked block only (option "m"). Two marks have to
be present in the current buffer in order to obtained a printout of the marked
portion of the text. Option "q" terminates the print command.

There are some important options of the Alt A command that have to be
selected before the print command is invoked.

WORDFLEX allows you to use the parallel port for printed output ("lpt1"
option, the default) or the serial port ("com1" option). Furthermore, you can
select the left margin for printing; this allows you to enter text starting in
column 1. An appropriate left margin for a printed output can be selected by
the option "l" of the Alt A command. Single or multiple spaced printing
is selected by option "k". The default is single spaced printing.

Continuous or single sheet printing can be selected by the "m" option.
By default, the option (pause at the top of a page) is FALSE, i.e. a
continuous printout takes place. If the option is set TRUE, a page is printed
and the sheet ejected. The next page is printed only after "c" (continue) has
                            ***Press Ctrl Pg Dn***
been entered following the prompt on the command line. The single sheet
printing is operational only when the formfeed (ASCII 12, ) character is the
first character on the next page. The formfeed character on the selected
first page is ignored when the "m" option is TRUE.

This concludes this tutorial session. Practice now the options of the
print command now on this file or on your test.txt file. Evaluate the effect
of double strike printing on your printer; good mechanical alignment is
essential for this technique of text emphasis.
