                 WORDFLEX INSTALLATION GUIDE.

    1. Installation procedure.

Insert your system diskette into drive a and start the IBM
Personal Computer by turning the power on.

Replace the system diskette with the WORDFLEX distribution
diskette (diskette 1 if you have single sided drives) in drive a.

Type "start". This command will start an installation
program which is selfexplanatory. As you will see, it gives you
a chance to format your WORDFLEX working diskette according to
your hardware and software configuration and it will offer you
several other options. It will automatically start your first
WORDFLEX tutorial session using your newly created diskette.

Note: if you want to use the formatting option of the
WORDFLEX installation program, you have to transfer your version
of IBM PC DOS onto the WORDFLEX distribution diskette and to copy
files "command.com" and "format.com" from your system diskette.
If you forget to do it before invoking your "start" command, the
installation program will take care of it by issuing commands
"sys a:"," copy command.com a:" and "copy format.com a:".

If you prefer to have a diskette that will invoke WORDFLEX
automatically, you should select this option of the installation
program. This installation option will transfer file
autoexec.bat from the distribution diskette onto your working
diskette. DOS version copied onto the WORDFLEX distribution
diskette will be used by your working diskette.

The "start" installation option is meant to create your
first WORDFLEX working diskette, containing all the files
necessary for text processing and learning how to use WORDFLEX.
For installation of WORDFLEX working diskette without tutorials,
you type "transfer" instead of "start". Before you do that, we
suggest that you first familiarize yourself with WORDFLEX in the
five tutorial sessions provided.

WORDFLEX runs under DOS Versions 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. If you
have more than one version, you may select Version 1.1 (or 1.0)
for systems with 128 Kbytes memory, since it requires 12 Kbytes
less memory than Version 2.0 to run. With 128 Kbytes of memory,
WORDFLEX uses 46 Kbytes for the text buffer under Version 1.1
(about 18 single spaced pages of text) and about 35 Kbytes under
DOS Version 2.0 (about 13 pages). Any additional memory installed
and available (i.e., not used for printer spooling or memory
drives) is added to the size of the text buffer. Users with 256
Kbytes can edit up to 60 pages and do not have to worry about the
version of DOS they are using.

WORDFLEX Installation Guide

The WORDFLEX distribution diskette is not copy protected
but it cannot be used to run WORDFLEX. This was done
intentionally to protect you from an accidental erasure of any
of the files needed by WORDFLEX.

Users running DOS Version 2.0 cannot fully utilize the
subdirectory feature of the operating system with this version of
WORDFLEX. The program is able to access only files in the
current directories on all installed drives. A new version is
being written which will allow usage of file path specifications
introduced in DOS Version 2.0. This new version of WORDFLEX
should be ready in summer 1983 and you will be informed that a
free update is available when the work is completed.

This concludes the instructions how to install WORDFLEX.
At this time, you do not have to read the following technical
information how WORDFLEX works and what is the purpose of the
files included on your distribution diskette(s). You may decide
to return to the following section once you became more familiar
with WORDFLEX.

    2. Overview of the WORDFLEX System.

The following files are included on your distribution
diskette:

          wx.exe - WORDFLEX main program

          install.exe - WORDFLEX installation program

defaults.exe - program for modification of
                              WORDFLEX default parameters.

start.bat - file for creation of your first
                              working WORDFLEX diskette

transfer.bat - file for creation of additional
                              working WORDFLEX diskettes

          autoexec.bat - automatic start file

WORDFLEX Installation Guide

ibm, color, - files containing WORDFLEX default
          monochr parameters.

help.txt - online help file containing
                              summary of WORDFLEX commands.

          tutor1.txt
          tutor2.txt
          tutor3.txt - tutorial files
          tutor4.txt
          tutor5.txt

To run, WORDFLEX needs the following files

               wx.exe
               config.www
               help.txt

File config.www is intentionally not included on the distribution
diskette in order to protect it against accidental file erasure.

You can, however, override this protection by renaming one
of the files ibm, color or monochr to config.www. The files ibm,
color and monochrome are needed for IBM Monochrome display,
Color/Graphics Adapter with a color monitor and Color/Graphics
Adapter with a monochrome monitor, respectively.

The installation program "install" allows you to select the
proper file to be included on your working diskette as
config.www. If you have both the Monochrome and Color/Graphics
boards, you have to create various working diskettes with the
proper options.

Program "install" accepts a numerical parameter. You can
run it directly by typing "install n" where n is 1 for creation
of a working diskette wit tutorial files and 2 for file transfer
with all options selectable.

     Program "install" generates batch file

                          "copbat.bat"

containing commands to perform diskette formatting and transfer
of all essential and some optional files. It will appear on you
distribution diskette directory after you have invoked either the
"start" or the "transfer" batch file.

WORDFLEX Installation Guide

Section XIII of the User's manual explains the workings of
the defaults.exe program. This program senses the settings of
the switches that select the display and creates file config.www
according to the settings and your selection of color or
monochrome display if the Color/Graphics Adapter board is
installed. This procedure is described in the last section of
the Manual since it assumes thorough knowledge of the options
available in WORDFLEX. We have to caution you not use it
prematurely; strange things can happen if you do not select the
options properly.
