These are the system configuration files. They are installed
into the /etc/newconfig directory. Note that a pre-existing
/etc/newconfig will be saved as /etc/oldconfig and that any
pre-existing /etc/oldconfig will be lost. The individual files
may be put in place by hand, or use "make config" to do them all.
It is a good idea to edit the versions in /etc/newconfig and use
"make config" to put them in place. This keeps the "essence" of
your system in a single place and makes upgrades easier.

Note that /.hostname, /etc/fstab and /etc/hosts are exceptions
in that "make config" will never install them, although it does
put copies of them in /etc/newconfig.
