============================ README.TXT ================================== Welcome to the Walnut Creek East Asian Text Processing CDROM, June 1994 edition! This disc contains programs and applications to help you process, understand, and view the Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese languages. Also included are text files related to information processing in those languages and the countries that understand them. Please refer to individual documentation if provided for contacting the authors. If you have Usenet access, the sci.lang.japan newsgroup is a useful place to ask questions on many of the programs on this CDROM. Please check individual files for copyrights and distribution restrictions. =========================================================================== Here is a list of important files and directories go.bat Batch file that lists the readme.txt file (MS-DOS) view.exe Program to view/copy/unzip files on the disc (MS-DOS) j_inst.bat Installs JReader (Japanese text viewer used by VIEW.EXE) onto your hard drive (MS-DOS) j_uninst.bat Uninstalls CNVIEW from your hard drive c_inst.bat Installs CNVIEW (Chinese text viewer used by VIEW.EXE) onto your hard drive (MS-DOS) c_uninst.bat Uninstalls CNVIEW from your hard drive (MS-DOS) 00_index.txt Description of all the files on this CDROM 00_index.zip Zipped copy of index.txt travel U.S. State Travel information for countries in Asia images Gif images (No viewer is included) tools Useful utilities and tools for MSDOS =========================================================================== USING THE VIEW PROGRAM To use this disc, merely change drives to your CD-ROM drive, then type "VIEW" in the root directory of the CD-ROM drive, then press enter. The VIEW program will then display a listing of the subdirectories and their description on the disc. Use the cursor keys to move the highlight bar up and down the screen. Then press ENTER to change into any of the subdirectories. The VIEW program will then display a list of files within that particular subdirectory. (To return to the subdirectory listing, press the ESCAPE key.) While in the list of files, the VIEW program can let you read a text file, uncompress a zipped file, or copy a file onto another drive. To read a text file, merely position the highlight bar onto the line with the filename you wish to read, then press ENTER. While reading the document, if you wish to search for a string, press either the "S" key, CONTROL-S (type "S" while holding down the Control key), or F9 then enter the string you want to search for. To search for the string again, merely press the S key, CONTROL-S, or F9 key. You may do reverse searches by pressing R, CONTROL-R, or F10 the same way. To uncompress a zipped file, position the highlight bar onto the line with the filename you wish to uncompress, then press ENTER. The screen will change to ask you to where you wish to uncompress the file, the default being a directory on your C: drive. If you wish, you may edit this destination box. Press ENTER to begin uncompressing the file, or press ESCAPE to abort. After uncompressing, you will have the option to either exit out to the directory to which the VIEW program uncompressed the file, or to return to the menu. If you decide to return the menu, be sure to remember to where you uncompressed the file! To copy a file, position the highlight bar onto the line you want to copy, then press ENTER. The screen will change to ask you to where you wish to copy the file. The default place is a directory on your C: drive. If you wish, you may edit this destination box. Press ENTER to copy the file, or press ESCAPE to abort. After copying, you will have the option to either exit out to the directory to which the VIEW program copied the file, or to return to the menu. If you decide to return the menu, be sure to remember where you copied the file! To view files that are written in Japanese and Chinese, first try to position the highlight bar onto the filename that you wish to read and press the ENTER key. The VIEW program can recognize most of the files in Japanese and Chinese and will display them accordingly. If just pressing enter doesn't work, try hitting the following keys for the following cases: J - to view a file in Japanese. G - to view a file in Chinese, encoded using the GB standard. 5 - to view a file in Chinese, encoded using the BIG5 standard. You should be able to tell when a text file is written in either Japanese or Chinese when the text file contains strings that look like: 私の名前は秋山です。 Please read the following section to get a better idea about how the Japanese and Chinese text viewers work. =========================================================================== JReader and CNVIEW JReader (by Jim Breen) and CNView (by Jifang Lin) allow you to view Japanese and Chinese, respectively. We configured the VIEW program (described above) to use these two programs to view the Usenet articles. You MAY install JReader and CNVIEW onto your hard drive for faster access. To do so, use the following batch files: J_INST.BAT to install JREADER C_INST.BAT to install CNVIEW The usage is the following: J_INST C_INST For example, typing the following at your CDROM prompt and pressing enter: J_INST C: will install JReader onto your C drive. If you find that you need space on your hard drive, or if you wish to get rid of one of these viewers, use the following batch files to delete them from your hard drive: J_INST.BAT to uninstall JREADER C_INST.BAT to uninstall CNVIEW The usage is the following: J_UNINST C_UNINST For example, typing the following at your CDROM prompt and pressing enter: J_UNINST C: will uninstall JReader from your C drive. =========================================================================== Special sections of the CDROM: /japanese/systems/ujip - character lists, mapping information, and software all described or listed in "Understanding Japanese Information Processing" by Ken Lunde. /japanese/texts/kahaner - reports written about computing in Japan by Dr. David Kahaner. /japanese/systems/msdos/jimbreen - Programs by Jim Breen and associated utilities by Mark Edwards. =========================================================================== This disc conforms to the level 1 ISO-9660 format with Rock Ridge extensions. If your operating system supports Rock Ridge, you can access the files using the full Unix pathnames. If your system does not support Rock Ridge, your system limits the filenames to eight single-case characters, with an extension of up to three characters. Each directory on this disc has a file named 00_TRANS.TBL, that maps the ISO-9660 compliant filenames to the original, Unix-style, filenames. =========================================================================== Although you may own this disc, you do not own the programs recorded on it.
