Last update: March 31, 1999
Welcome to the DHTML Editing Component SDK. If you are reading this page, you've already installed the DHTML Editing Component, its included samples, and its documentation. The necessary components have all been registered on your Microsoft® Windows® 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT® system.
The DHTML Editing Component is now part of the minimum installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5. If you are developing and distributing your application in an environment where users have Internet Explorer 5, then you do not need to use this SDK and do not need to include the component as part of your application. You should uninstall this SDK. Then, to find more information about how to develop with the DHTML Editing Component and Internet Explorer 5, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/dhtml/edit/default.asp on the MSDN online Web Workshop.
This SDK includes a new version of the DHTML Editing Component ActiveX control (DHTMLEd.ocx). The older version of the control marked as safe for scripting allowed users to load documents from any domain, which under some circumstances posed a security risk. The new version of the safe-for-scripting control allows users to load a document only if the document is in the same domain as the hosting application. As an additional security precaution, the new version of the control does not support server redirection.
Note There has been no change to the version of the control that is not marked as safe for scripting. The change described here will probably only affect you if you have created applications that host the DHTML Editing Control on a Web page.
The implications are:
codebase attribute in the <OBJECT> tag, be sure that an updated version of the control is available at the location specified by the codebase attribute. If you did not specify a codebase attribute, the new version of the control will automatically be downloaded from the Microsoft ActiveX control site.
If your system has met the other requirements listed below, you are ready to begin using the component or running the samples.
There are four directories in the SDK:
| Directory | Contents | |
|---|---|---|
| \BIN | The component binary files. | |
| \INC | The include files for C++, Microsoft Visual Basic®, VBScript, and JScript®. | |
| \DOC | The documentation in the form of a compiled HTML Help (.chm) file. | |
| \SAMPLES | Executable sample applications, including source code. |
| Hardware | Processor | 486/66 or higher |
| RAM |
|
|
| Disk space | To work with the DHTML Editing Component SDK, you need 3MB of disk space. When installed on an end user's computer, the DHTML Editing Component requires 300KB of disk space. | |
| Software | Operating system | Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. If you are running Windows NT 4.0, you must install Windows NT Service Pack 3. We recommend using Windows NT 4 for doing development with the DHTML Editing Component SDK.
Note The SDK has not been extensively tested with Windows 2000 Beta releases. |
| Internet Explorer | Internet Explorer version 4.01 with Service Pack 1. The DHTML Editing Component should not be used with Internet Explorer 4.0. You can obtain Internet Explorer 4.01 from the Microsoft Internet Explorer Web site. | |
| Other | Visual C++ | To host the DHTML Editing Component in a C++ environment, you need Microsoft Visual C++ 5.0 or later. |
| Visual Basic | To use the DHTML Editing Component in Visual Basic, you must use Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 or later. | |
| Samples | To use the sample applications, you require specific software. Details are provided in the Samples.htm file in the \SAMPLES folder. |
We want your feedback! Please send your comments to the newsgroup microsoft.public.inetsdk.programming.dhtml_editing. We will also use this newsgroup to let you know about the latest developments with the component.
