Microsoft DHTML Editing Component SDK

Last update: March 31, 1999

Welcome to the DHTML Editing Component SDK. If you are reading this page, you've already installed the DHTML Editing Component, its included samples, and its documentation. The necessary components have all been registered on your Microsoft® Windows® 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT® system.

Late-Breaking News

The information contained in the documentation and in this Readme file was current at the time we released the DHTML Editing Component. Below we've listed recent changes to the DHTML Editing Component. Be sure also to check the section Dynamic HTML Editing Component Web page on the MSDN online Web Workshop.

DHTML Editing Component Now in Internet Explorer 5

The DHTML Editing Component is now part of the minimum installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5. If you are developing and distributing your application in an environment where users have Internet Explorer 5, then you do not need to use this SDK and do not need to include the component as part of your application. You should uninstall this SDK. Then, to find more information about how to develop with the DHTML Editing Component and Internet Explorer 5, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/dhtml/edit/default.asp on the MSDN online Web Workshop.

New Version of Safe-for-Scripting Control

This SDK includes a new version of the DHTML Editing Component ActiveX control (DHTMLEd.ocx). The older version of the control marked as safe for scripting allowed users to load documents from any domain, which under some circumstances posed a security risk. The new version of the safe-for-scripting control allows users to load a document only if the document is in the same domain as the hosting application. As an additional security precaution, the new version of the control does not support server redirection.

Note   There has been no change to the version of the control that is not marked as safe for scripting. The change described here will probably only affect you if you have created applications that host the DHTML Editing Control on a Web page.

The implications are:

Getting Started

If your system has met the other requirements listed below, you are ready to begin using the component or running the samples.

There are four directories in the SDK:

Directory Contents
\BIN The component binary files.
\INC The include files for C++, Microsoft Visual Basic®, VBScript, and JScript®.
\DOC The documentation in the form of a compiled HTML Help (.chm) file.
\SAMPLES Executable sample applications, including source code.

For more information on using the DHTML Editing Component, click the SDK_Help.chm file in the \DOC directory. For more information about the sample applications, see the Samples.htm file in the \SAMPLES folder.

System Requirements

The following table lists the hardware and software requirements for installing and using the DHTML Editing Component.

Hardware Processor  486/66 or higher
RAM
  • 12MB RAM with Internet Explorer 4.01 browser-only installation and Outlook Express on Windows 95
  •  8MB RAM for standard Internet Explorer 4.01 installation and Outlook Express on Windows 95 without the Windows Desktop Update
  • 16MB RAM for standard or full Internet Explorer 4.01 installations on Windows 95 with Windows Desktop Update
  • 24MB RAM for all Internet Explorer 4.01 installations on Windows NT 4.0
