Internet Explorer 4.5 Macintosh Edition

Important Notes
If you get lost along the way, you can review the detailed instructions by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page. When you're finished, remember to register the software.

About the downloads: You can choose to download either a MacBinary (.bin) or Binhex (.hqx) formatted file. For a faster download, we recommend the MacBinary version of Internet Explorer 4.5 Macintosh Edition. If your web browser or ftp client is not configured for MacBinary, or if you experience problems downloading using MacBinary, you can download the Binhex posting of this software. You will receive the same software no matter which option you download. Your download will result in a .smi file being saved to the desktop. Once the .smi file is on your desktop, you can double click it to extract the folder it contains. The folder is named Microsoft Internet 4.5, Internet Explorer 4.5, or Outlook Express 4.5, depending on the installation you chose. To install Microsoft Internet Explorer or Microsoft Outlook Express, open the folder and follow the directions you see there.

About Plug-ins: When Internet Explorer 4.5 is installed, it installs in a new folder and does not replace your old browser installation. Plug-ins are stored in the Plug-ins folder in your browser folder. Internet Explorer 4.5 does not pull the plug-ins from your old browser folder. To get your plug-ins working with Internet Explorer 4.5, you can:

  • Copy the plug-ins from your old browser plug-ins folder to the Internet Explorer 4.5 plug-ins folder
  • Visit the Microsoft MacTopia or Internet Explorer 4.5 Web site to download an AppleScript which will do this for you
  • Re-install your plug-ins.

Re-installing the plug-ins is recommended as newer versions may be available and some plug-in installers modify browser settings in order to work correctly. For example, most plug-ins require the browser to have more memory available and reset the Preferred Size accordingly. In order to re-install your plug-ins, look in your old browser plug-ins folder for the names of the plug-ins (Shockwave for example). To find that plug-in on the Internet, make sure you are connected to the Internet, click the Go menu, and then click Search the Internet. Type "plug-in" or the name of the plug-in (Shockwave) into one of the search fields and then click Search. Follow the instructions for installing the plug-in. In order to copy plug-ins from your old browser plug-ins folder, you should select all the items in the old browser plug-ins folder except the Default Plugin. Copy these items into the Internet Explorer 4.5 plug-ins folder. Make sure that you have set aside enough memory for plug-ins to work. To allocate more memory, quit Microsoft Internet Explorer if it is running. Click the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop to select it, and then on the File menu, click Get Info. Set the Preferred Size to the amount recommended by your plug-in documentation. If that documentation is not available, try increasing the Preferred Size to 8000K. In Mac OS version 8.5 and later, Preferred Size is available in the Memory Get Info panel.

Apple QuickTime Plug-In: Some users have noted that Internet Explorer 4.5 does not ship with the latest plug-in (version 2.0.1) for Apple QuickTime 3.0, but instead ships with version 1.1.1 of the Apple QuickTime plug-in which doesn't support additional media formats. This was a design decision to support users who aren't currently using QT 3.0. We shipped the QT 1.1.1 plug-in because shipping the 2.0.1 plug-in would have broken QT on machines that aren't running QT 3.0 (Mac OS versions earlier than 8.1). An AppleScript will be posted to the MacTopia website by the end of the week that will migrate the plug-ins users had installed with their previous browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape). Users can also simply manually move or copy the contents of their old plug-ins to the IE 4.5 Plug-Ins folder.

International users: To get the most from Internet Explorer 4.5 Macintosh Edition, be sure to load the appropriate language version that matches your operating system. Running unmatched versions may limit your ability to use some features.

Anti-Virus Software Users: Please note that some anti-virus software programs may interfere with the download and should be disabled while installing Internet Explorer.
