It appears that key Windows 95 program files required to download and install ActiveX controls are only available from Microsoft via their free Internet Explorer browser (IE3 or IE4) or the Windows 95 OSR2 version.

Note: The Windows 95 OSR2 version (released August 96) automatically installs the IE3 browser. Though Microsoft does not allow you to uninstall it, you can uninstall IE3 by updating to the IE302 version, and then using the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs facility. The IE302 version updates a number of Windows 95 system files for faster, more reliable and more secure Internet access. The OSR2 version is identified by the Windows 95/Internet Explorer logo at power-up.

Since Microsoft has released ActiveX as an 'open technology' we are currently trying to obtain clarification from Microsoft re inclusion of these files in the 1X Setup program.

In the meantime, to use 1X you will either need Windows 95 OSR2 or later, NT4, or have previously installed IE3 or IE4 on the original Windows 95 version. Note that the updated Windows 95 system files (included with IE302 and used by 1X) remain when IE3 is un-installed.

Problem reports

Type 1X /L at the Windows Start|Run dialog to create a log file (1X.EXE.TXT) with troubleshooting details when loading 1X. Any error entries will be preceded with the ERROR keyword (in capitals). If you are unable to resolve the cause, send us an email with your log file included as a MIME attachment.

Latest version

The latest 1X Net Browser available for download is Issue 0.12. Press F1 to view the version of your current installation - the issue number is listed at the top of the Help page. To update, simply download, then close 1X before running the latest 1XSetup file.
