(1) Did you read all help-files in your apsfilter toplevel directory ?
FAQ INSTALL KNOWN_BUGS TROUBLESHOOTING. If not, then please do so first.

(2) Did you enable debugging in the shellscript apsfilter to track down
simple errors yourself ? More infos how to do this, see TROUBLESHOOTING,
section 1.5. Please do so first !!!

(3) Any error messages from your operating system, indicating trouble
    concerning TCP/IP, lpd ?

(4) Ok, give us the the problem description, perhaps we can help...

(5) Then please tell us something about your operating system and
    your printer:

	Operating System: FreeBSD 1.1.5.1
	Distribution	: (if Linux: i.e. LST-1.8 or Slackware 2.0.1 )
	Kernel-Release	: (if Linux: i.e. 0.99pl14 or 1.1.49 )
	apsfilter Rel.	: aps-48.tgz
	Printer : HP DeskJet 500
	Mono/Color	: monochrome
	PS-Printer	: no
	Resolution	: 300dpi

Your Full Name	: Andreas Klemm
	Your e-mail addr: andreas@knobel.gun.de

(6) _One_ printer entry from your /etc/printcap file would be fine !

	# LABEL apsfilter
	# apsfilter setup Sun Sep 25 13:12:06 MET 1994
	#
	# APS_BASEDIR:/usr/accounts/andreas/apsfilter/apsfilter
	#
	#
	ascii|lp1|djet500-a4-ascii-mono|djet500 ascii mono:\
		:lp=/dev/lpt0:\
		:sd=/var/spool/djet500:\
		:lf=/var/spool/djet500/log:\
		:af=/var/spool/djet500/acct:\
		:if=/usr/local/lib/apsfilter/filter/aps-djet500-a4-ascii-mono:\
		:mx#0:\
		:sh:

(7) Did you modify /etc/apsfilterrc ?
(Could that perhaps be a cause for that failure ?! No ? Ok ...;-)

(8) Do you have a private and modified copy of /etc/apsfilterrc in
    your login/home directory ($HOME/.apsfilterrc) ?

(9) The output of your file(1) command on the file that can't be printed:
    i.e. type:	file file_that_can't_be_printed
		README: English text

(10) A short part of the logfile /var/spool/PrInTeR/log that indicates
an error. This logfile only contains debugging data, if you enabled
debugging as described in TROUBLESHOOTING, section 1.5.

Thanks for complete informations !
