(Releases are marked with an = instead of a -)

June 29/99 - Created .xbm's of all the original C-64 letters/numbers..
should be useful for something (options menu?)
           - Fixed small problems with clearshot()
           - Faster character, and more monsters for more action (More
             like Crossroads)
           - Added even more wall tiles (Not from Crossroads)
           - Took a hint from Snes9X to turn off the pointer in the window
(Well, actually it just turns the pointer into a single
pixel, but that's good enough for me)
           - Started gearing up for a new release, everything seems fairly
             stable to me

June 28/99 - Monsters no longer attack unless they can see you. This was
mostly included to fix a bug where the VacAttack would pull
you through a wall under some conditions. It will also be
useful when better monster targetting code is added
           - Monsters will now attack a Green Vaccum if they are being
             sucked
           - Now the game won't end until ALL players are dead
           - Slight alterations to tiledata.c Might move to using .xbm's
           - Worked on "slippery walls". If you press against a wall,
XRoads will try to move in the direction you were originally
moving (This makes the handling work better, and is really
cool when you get used to it). (Seems to be bug free...)

June 27/99 - Added a signal handler to catch fatal errors and exit nicely.
No more having to type 'xset r' after a segfault (Currently
catches SIGSEGV, SIGBUS, SIGTERM, SIGINT, and SIGHUP). Note
that after cleaning up, core dumps and such will still take
             place (this is intentional)
           - Corrected bug where no spars would be spawned if
SPARSPERLEVEL was less than 5. Now always spawns at least one
           - Made 'make install' nicer with respect to XRMPATH
           - Added 'make uninstall' which deletes xroads and it's data
           - Updated the README on some new features
           - Some code modifications: readjoy(), updatescore()
           - Map names changed to mapXX.xrm, allowing up to 100 predefined
             maps
           - Added more maps and wall tiles from Crossroads I and II
           - VacAttack now works (I hope) Being sucked up by a vaccuum is
instant death. I'd like to test this code a little more
before I declare it "working" though

June 26/99 - Recieved an updated random map generator from Michele Bini
which features axial, biaxial, and central symmettry, so the
maps are even better! XRoads will also dump to stdout the
seed used to create that map (Eventually, you'll be able to
tell XRoads which seed to use, but not yet) Great work
             Michele!
           - Finally added an install procedure... just 'make install',
and it will copy the map files into /usr/games/xroads, and
the binary into /usr/X11R6/bin (If you want to install to
different directories, you must also change the XRMPATH
             constant in config.h)
           - (Hopefully) fixed a bug where a spar would appear between two
squares along the top or left side

June 24/99 - Fixed some annoying bugs with wrapping movement. Should be
             all cleared up now
           - Fixed some minor problems with pause screen

June 22/99 - Half-steps should be nice and stable for all players and
             creatures
           - Started work on VacAttack. It sort of works, but I think I
might have to rewrite some stuff to make it work the way it
             did in Crossroads
           - Joystick control can now be set to a certain player with the
             -j command line option. "xroads -p 3 -j 2" will make the
             joystick control player 2
           - Merged in a random maze generator written by Michele Bini.
             Thanks Michele! It works great!
           - Random maze generator hits a bug introduced by half-steps.
(Problems with player wrapping from one side of the maze to
             another)

June 21/99 - Player now successfully makes "half-steps". Though this slows
down the players motion a little, making the game a little
slower paced. Changed players speed to compensate somewhat.
Also, the changes to playerturn() that let you take
half-steps are NASTY. There's probably a much easier way to
             do it, but it works
           - Monsters also do half-steps... though there are still some
bugs to be worked out. I really should just rewrite most of
             the monster code
           - Rewrote some of the monster movement code so that it works
better with half-steps. Still some problems though
           - Merged in my joystick driver, works great on my Gravis! Not
sure how well it'll work on an analog joystick. Joystick
currently controls player 1, but will be selectable

June 20/99 = XRoads v0.4 (The Anniversary Edition) is released, almost 11
             months after v0.3
           - Wrote a test program (not part of XRoads) that is able to
read joystick input. XRoads v0.5 will likely have joystick
support, though I want to clear up a few things before I
incorporate this into XRoads (btw, it uses the Linux joystick
driver, so I'm not sure how portable this is...)

June 19/99 - More multiplayer mode fixes. Three and four player mode
should be working as well as 2 player mode now (single player
still works best for now though)
           - Player 3 and 4 keys defined: i, k, j, l, space are up, down,
left, right, and fire for player 3, and 8, 5, 4, 6, and Enter
on the keypad are player 4's keys. Yeah, I know this is
crowded, change them in config.h if you don't like them (If
5 on the keypad isn't working for you, let me know... I'm not
sure how universal the method I took is...)
           - Score for players 3 and 4 now shown in score box
           - Scorebox resizes itself on startup depending on number of
             players
           - "xroads -keys" now shows the keyboard configuration for all
players, plus the extra keys (pause, quit, etc)
           - Status bar shows a picture of the player instead of just
"Player 1". I'd like to eventually jam all 4 players info
into a one-line status bar, so there'll be more icons coming

June 18/99 - Many fixes to multiplayer mode, 2nd player score now shown
           - Number of players now a command line option, use xroads -p #
to play with # players (must be between 1 and 4). Players 3
and 4 don't work properly yet though (No keys defined yet)
           - Fixed some strange externs hoping it would fix the segfault..
             ... it didn't

June 17/99 - 2 Player mode now works! There are still some issues that
need to be cleared up (such as when to exit, and some
scoring), but both can run and fire and collect spars getting
the other 2 players working would be trivial, but I first
want to work in a command line option to choose 2 player mode
so that 4 player mode won't be the default
           - Some changes to the keyhandling (necessary for multiplayer)
have mutated a known bug into a segfault. See BUGS for more
             info
           - Keys changed: Return is now the default fire key. This can be
put back to space in config.h by defining OLDKEYS
           - Added an alternate fire for future use (backslash for P1,
             caps lock for P2)

June 14/99 - Made room for 3 more players. Multiplayer is still not
possible yet, but it's a lot closer. I'll have to find some
better ways to control characters though... 4 players on one
             keyboard would suck (joystick?)
           - Introduced tons of bugs, but squashed most of them
           - Slowed down the speed-up from the Blue Spar. It still makes
you really fast, but it was too fast to control before (Plus,
I have plans for extra power-ups in the future, one of which
will be a Super-Turbo, and it has to be faster)
           - Made Hyper Mode a lot faster... it's basically unplayable :)
           - Bumped the version numbers in all the files to 0.4... a lot
             of them still said v0.1

June 13/99 - Yikes! It's been a damn long time! However, someone just
emailled me about the game saying they liked it, so I got
inspired to work on it a bit more :) Thanks!
           - Added the start of some parenting code. This means that
XRoads will know what bullets belong to who, and will make a
2 player mode MUCH easier to code
           - Due to parenting, you can't get credit for monsters that kill
each other. They get their own points.
           - Some new elements in the entity structure: ind for the index
of the monster in monst[], hurt for knowing who hit the
monster last (Currently used for scoring purposes, will
probably be incorporated into AI though... revenge anyone? :)
           - Updated TODO and BUGS a bit
           - Monsters will now attack each other! However, it will only
happen if you get one to anger another, like in Doom and
Quake. Since the enemies are really stupid, I'll probably
upgrade their homing range if they're attacking someone other
than the player, that way it'll be more fun to watch
           - Also cleaned up the nastiness that was desthome(), and some
other functions that were too restrictive
           - Worm's deaths will no longer spawn another creature, this
would cause huge amounts of enemies when a few rubberheads
             were in the level
           - Monsters won't get mad at themselves and suicide (oops :)
           - Fixed an incredibly stupid bug in fileops.c that was causing
the frozen archers. I'm not the best programmer, but yikes,
             that was a bad one...
           - Also of note: Next week (June 20/99) will be the one year
anniversary of XRoad's first release! Hopefully, I'll have
             something special then...

Sept 1/98 - (I was on a 2 week trip to Philadelphia, and I've been
getting ready for university, gimme a break)
           - Got an account on a SunOS 5.5.1 machine, and got XRoads to
compile, though I get tons of warnings from Xlib. The game
still works fine, so I'll just assume they're not my fault :)
Also cleaned up a bit of the source per my university's gcc
(btw, their 'cc' doesn't seem to like XRoads, and I'm too
             lazy to figure out why)

Aug. 3/98 - My Birthday... 18 years old, woohoo!
= Fourth public release of XRoads (v0.3)

Aug. 2/98 - Some score counting added in (The score is held in a long
int, so don't even bother trying to overflow it... or am I
the only one that tries to crash games like this? heheh)
           - Heads up display that shows your health, score, etc... I am
NOT happy with the way it works right now, so expect it to
             change soon
           - Ooops, Arrows were doing 2 hits of damage instead of one, and
             pulling some funny stuff... fixed.
           - Added in a secret. Here's a hint: Not ALL the keys are unused
           - Two new powerups! : The Blue Spar, which speeds up your
character (though some people might have a hard time
controlling such a fast character, it can be powerful if you
learn to use it), and the Red Spar, which speeds up your gun
(Unfortunately, this causes your character to move a little
slower because the game thinks you're trying to walk into a
bullet, and it stops you [This is NOT a side effect of the
red spar, it is a bug]) These powerups act as normal spars as
well, giving you another hit point, and counting towards your
spar count for the level. They are spawned randomly in place
             of a normal spar.
           - Various small changes that no one will notice

Aug. 1/98 - Rewrote key handling to accept multiple keypresses at once
(which means you can run and fire at the same time) Thanks to
Richard Wicks for telling me how to do this! :) This new code
makes way for a LOT of enhancements to come, such as speed-up
spars and 2 player mode (!)
           - New key handling makes player WAY too fast, and my current
slowdown methods sort of ruin the responsiveness :( I'll have
to work on things a little... (delay reduced to nothing in
Hyper mode for the speed freaks out there, heheh >:)
           - Some data changed to enums. Enums are good.
           - Pause button added. Actually, two of them: P as well as that
Pause key in the corner of your keyboard, which I find to be
             underused.

July 30/98 - Cleaned up source code so that it all compiles with -Wall
without any errors at all :)

July 29/98 - Characters with close up attacks (bite, kick, flail with
limbs) can now actually attack and cause damage. Beware!
           - titlescreen() and gameover() functions merged into
             screenmsg()
           - Intro's to levels using screenmsg() (Only says the level
             number so far)
           - -display command line parameter works now, though displays
             over networks can be slow
           - -xrm parameter made a little smarter (if directory supplied
doesn't have a / at the end, it adds one)

July 23/98 - XRoads now responds to delete signals sent by window managers
(only works during play, not title screens (yet)) (I stole,
err... "borrowed" this code from XSokoban :) Thanks to whoever
             wrote that game!)
           - Wrote a function so that the game can be ended from anywhere
else in the program (Was using goto's before), and made
sensible error messages for such circumstances
           - Argh! sig11 errors from my compiler... this is NOT good...
XRoads still compiles fine after a few tries
           - Keys are now configurable in config.h in case you feel the
             need to change them
           - A Quit key has now been added (defaults to Escape), and
clicking on the window to quit has been removed, because it's
             useless now
= Third public release of XRoads (v0.2)

July 21/98 - No longer crashes without DISPLAY environment variable
           - Spars now work correctly! You need to collect 10 to go on to
the next level, and each one collected adds to your hit
points. Unfortunately, there is no way (yet) to tell how many
spars you've collected, or how many hit points you have.
           - 5 new maps copied straight from Crossroads 1

July 19/98 - Window resizing is no longer allowed (I gleaned this from
             Jason Nunn's "Nighthawk")

July 13/98 - Okay, time to end this break... I've been slacking off :P
           - For some reason, I made it so that XRoads can recieve Client
Message events. I don't know if it works right, but it's
there for any reason it might be useful.
           - Fixed redrawing routines so that the window doesn't redraw
300 times in a row on opaque moves (This time the limiting
actually works! No more XSync()'s to clear the queue)
           - Redrawing of title/gameover screens fixed similarly

June 30/98 - XRoads now uses the arrow keys to move around, and the space
bar to fire! No more having to read the manual anymore! heheh
Thanks to Fredrick Knieper and Vivek for their help in
             understanding keysyms :)
           - Added code to provide more info about characters to help with
adding in powerups and special effects later
           - Started to add in spars. They appear, but they don't function
             quite right yet

June 29/98 - Back to Work! I'm done with all the graduation stuff at high
school, and my girlfriend is away at camp for the next three
weeks, so I'll probably spend a lot of time on this.
           - Game screens now respond to the Enter key as well
           - Gave the player twice as much health so you'll last longer
(This is only until there are actual powerups in the game)
Actually, I did this a while ago, but forgot to mention it.
           - Monochrome support still messed up. Does anyone really need
this? Because I'm not sure I want to take the time to fix it.
= Second public release of XRoads (v0.1.5)
           - Began implementation of command line parameters (Bah,
             released v0.1.5 too early :)
           - Segfault from random number generator caught and squashed
             thanks to Murat Deligonul

June 24/98 - There is now a new option in the Makefile: Path to xrm files.
The XRoads Map files can now be somewhere else other than the
             current directory.
           - Okay, it seems my speed tinkerings have worked! Though I'm
still rather unsure of the speed to use... using a GAMEDELAY
of 50000 (50 millisecond delay per turn) seems good to me,
but my friend using a K6-300 says 700 (0.7 millisecond delay
per turn is nice. Seems strange considering my computer is a
LOT slower than his... Your milage may vary
           - Just a few more tweaks, and a new version should be available
soon (v0.1.5). I want 0.2 to have command line parameters,
but that will take a while, and XRoads needs this speed fix
             now.

June 22/98 - Got things working better with usleep(). I *think* it should
be less reliant on cpu speed now, but haven't been able to
test it yet. However, characters sometimes seem to pause when
you hold down a button? I'll have to look into it...
           - XRoads reported to work on Solaris 2.6, however, it has some
problems with the Makefile for some reason. Bigger problems
             with BSD/OS 3.0 though.
           - Added -I/usr/X11R6/include to the LINK= line in the Makefile.
On my computer, that's one of the default include paths, so
it seemed unneccesary, but I think other computers/os's might
             need it
           - New flag for Makefile: -DHYPERMODE. You thought it was fast
before? This basically goes as fast as possible. WAY faster
             than with -DGAMEDELAY=0 even!
           - I just tried it, and for some reason Monochrome support is
broken. I was pretty sure that code was rather independant of
any other code, but I guess not. Oh well, it's not REALLY
important, but I'll try to fix it anyway

June 21/98 - Attempts made to make speed more cpu-independant. Why is
usleep(1) so much slower than usleep(0)??? It's one
             microsecond!!
           - Got word that XRoads compiles on Sparc Solaris 2.5.1, on an
Ultra 1/170 with only a change to the Makefile. I have added
the changed line to the Makefile in case anyone needs to
             un-comment it to compile

June 20/98 = First public release of XRoads (v0.1)
